Venus. Known around the world as the Roman goddess of beauty and love, Earth’s sister planet, and Sailor Senshi.
And now, my kitty! I’ve never really been a pet person, but I’ve always adored cats. Now that I have Venus, I’ve started feeling more comfortable around animals, and it’s been rather humbling!
But making the decision to adopt her was quite a spontaneous one. On one of my days off, I had gone to the Starbucks I worked at to pick up my tips and get a coffee. My coworker was there, telling me about how she had to start giving away her cats for personal reasons and asked if I was interested in rehoming her last one. I expressed some interest because, well, I was super interested. But at first, I was pretty hesitant about actually committing to it. I didn’t have any experience caring for an animal, nor was I prepared to save up money to do so. But the more she told me about Venus, the more willing I was to take her in. She just sounded so perfect!
The next night, I met Venus in person and brought her home. She was a bit afraid at first, but that same night, she started exploring every corner and crevice of my apartment, sniffing away at everything and anything that piqued her curiosity. She even fell into the trash can when jumping off the counter! I knew right then and there that we were gonna have a good time together.
I’ve been learning a lot about both Venus and myself throughout these past five months. She’s calm, quiet, curious, and adventurous. And boy, can she run fast! She loves shredded wet food, her pink bunny Georgi (thanks Christi!), and greeting people at the door. And I’ve learned that although I’m a homebody who absolutely relishes in the feeling of being alone, it’s been nice to have a furry companion by my side who sleeps with me, watches me cook, waits for me while I shower, and listens to me sing totally off-key in the early morning and the dead of night. I’m learning that it’s okay not to be alone all the time, and that I can find comfort in others too - human or not.
It’s definitely been a bit of a learning curve to 180 from being a hikikomori to a full-time pet sitter, but adopting Venus has been one of the best decisions I’ve made in a while. I can’t wait to grow with her and see where we are in the next two, three, four years. Will I have exciting stories about my development with ACtS United to share with her? Will she suddenly develop a taste for only organic wet food? Only time will tell, so in the meantime I’ll keep working hard to fulfill my role as CCO and keep feeding her those delicious meaty bits!
